Incheon City, Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation with UNDRR… Consolidating International Leadership

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok met with Kamal Kishore, the representative of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), at the mayor's reception room today (22nd) to discuss cooperation and development strategies between UNDRR and Incheon City.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction is an international organization established to mitigate disasters resulting from global warming, following the conclusion of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) in 1989. Its headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland.

UNDRR's Northeast Asia Office and Global Education and Training Institute (UNDRR ONEA&GETI) were established in Songdo, Incheon, in 2009, leading the development of disaster risk reduction cooperation frameworks and educational programs in the Northeast Asia region.

In November 2021, Incheon City was the first in Asia to be recognized as a "Resilience Hub City" by UNDRR. Since then, the city has actively engaged in various collaborative projects, including hosting international events on disaster risk reduction, fostering exchanges with overseas cities, and supporting school safety programs.

Kamal Kishore expressed gratitude for Incheon City's continued support for the UNDRR Northeast Asia Office, hoping to strengthen cooperation with the city further for mutual development within the international community.

Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok stated, "Incheon City will contribute even more in the field of disaster risk reduction through its cooperation with UNDRR," and added, "As a global city playing a significant role in the international community, we will do our utmost to create a safe and sustainable future."
