Innospace, a domestic space launch vehicle development company, announced on the 29th that it has successfully conducted a methane engine combustion test, aiming to enhance the multi-launch mission capabilities of its launch vehicle, 'Hanbit.'
The methane engine is advantageous for multiple re-ignitions and precise thrust control, making it ideal for placing multiple satellites into the exact orbits desired by customers.
This means that the company can offer customized launch services tailored to the diverse needs of its clients.
Innospace began developing the methane engine in 2022 and successfully conducted a combustion test of a 0.4-ton-class methane engine, produced using 3D printing technology, in May of this year.
This engine is planned to be used in the kick stage of the 'Hanbit-Micro' launch vehicle, which is capable of sending a 170 kg payload into space.
Additionally, in July, the company completed the initial performance verification of a 3-ton-class methane engine combustor, which will be used in the upper stage of the two-stage launch vehicle 'Hanbit-Nano.'
Innospace plans to complete the development of the certification model and flight model of this engine by November 2024.
Soojong Kim, CEO of Innospace, expressed his expectations, saying, "The introduction of the methane engine allows us to selectively apply either hybrid engines or methane engines according to the characteristics of the launch mission, leading to more flexible and efficient launch services."
He also stated, "We will continue to strive to respond swiftly to changes in the global space market, enter new markets, and achieve sustainable growth."
